Industrial Metal Cleaning for Cookware and Cutlery Manufacturers: From Degreasing to Surface Finishing

Where Quality Cookware and Cutlery Is Made — and Where It Can Go Wrong

India is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of aluminium cookware and stainless steel cutlery. From mass-market vessels to premium non-stick cookware to surgical-grade cutlery, Indian manufacturers supply domestic and export markets at scale. Behind every finished product is a manufacturing process that demands chemically clean metal surfaces at every stage — from raw metal to finished goods.

Aluminium cookware — pans, pressure cookers, tawa, kadai — goes through deep drawing, spinning, or casting, followed by anodising or non-stick coating application. Stainless steel cutlery — knives, forks, spoons, serving ware — goes through pressing, grinding, buffing, and electropolishing or passivation. Each of these operations leaves contamination on the metal surface that must be completely removed before the next step.

For cookware and cutlery intended for food contact, surface cleanliness is not just a quality issue — it is a food safety issue. Industrial cleaning chemicals used in food-contact product manufacturing must be food-safe grade with documented compliance. REFA supplies food-safe cleaning chemicals with full compliance documentation for cookware and cutlery manufacturers.

Aluminium Cookware: Cleaning Before Anodising and Coating

Aluminium deep drawing uses lubricants that are extremely effective at preventing galling — but equally stubborn to remove. After forming, aluminium cookware surfaces carry drawing compound, mineral oil, and die lubricant that must be completely removed before anodising or non-stick coating.

The critical chemistry requirement: the degreaser must be gentle enough not to etch aluminium, but effective enough to completely remove forming lubricants. Strongly alkaline degreasers (pH above 11) will etch aluminium at processing temperatures, creating surface micro-pitting that affects anodising uniformity and non-stick coating adhesion.

REFA’s aluminium-safe degreaser (pH 9–10) is specifically formulated for cookware pre-treatment — removing all forming lubricants without surface attack. Used in immersion or spray systems with 50°C process temperature.

Stainless Steel Cutlery: Degreasing and Passivation

Stainless steel cutlery manufacturing leaves pressing lubricants, grinding compound, buffing compound, and handling contamination on the metal surface. Before electropolishing, passivation, or final packaging, these must be completely removed.

REFA’s stainless steel degreaser removes all contamination without attacking the passive layer of 304 and 316 stainless steel. A passivation step after degreasing and pickling restores the chromium oxide passive layer — ensuring the cutlery has the corrosion resistance and food-safe surface quality required by retail and export customers.

Machine Surface and Floor Cleaning

Cookware pressing and stamping machines, and cutlery polishing and grinding lines, accumulate aluminium fines, polishing compound, and oil on machine surfaces and floors. REFA’s machine surface cleaner and industrial epoxy floor cleaner address this contamination safely — without damaging machine surfaces or floors, and without leaving residues that could contaminate product.

Bin and Storage Cleaning

Cookware components and cutlery blanks stored in plastic bins between operations can pick up oil and metal contamination from dirty bins. REFA’s plastic bin cleaner is safe for all standard bin materials and removes all contamination reliably.
